Importance of Glassware

Everybody know that glass come in all shape and size, and in every cocktails book/site you will be presented the right one to choose for your cocktails.

As said before, im making this website to get the HOW and the WHY of things.

Thats why im here today and ill try to explain the logic behind the glass choice, so that next time you make a cocktails, you will know in wich glass to put it in.

The size of the outer rim make the main difference between the glasses.

Ok now we are going touse our logic.

The size of the rim determine the ammount and the flow of particle that get in your nose when drinking the cocktail.

Martini Glass :

Martini are usually strong cocktails ( no soda or juice )

So : If they would have small rim, all the strenght of the cocktails would come "concentrated" in your noise, burning your olfactive tissue ( not really but it woulndt be nice ). The big rim leave place for all the flavor to get to your nose, whitout being too strong.

Old Fashioned glass :

These glasses are often use to serve "On the Rock" alcool. The fearly large rim allow the strenght from the alcool not to be too contentraded but straight and small enough to keep the flavor of lets say, good scotch.

Higball :

Perfect for long drink because the high amount of juice/soda mask any scent that could be usefull. Glass make it perfect to drink with a straw. It also make it easy to make "built" drink and to stir it with a stick, like a screwdriver.

Champagne glass :

Its sligtly curved side, with a small rim, make it perfect for... yes, champagne. White wine glass have a smaller rim that red wine glass because the red have much more prononced and strong scent, so it need more space. The curved side is also to prevent bubble going out too fast.
